Argentine Tango in Kelowna

Sometimes I get a feeling that won't go away... to experience something without understanding why. Maybe hearing and loving the music. Maybe it was seeing it danced, not even live mind you, that I developed a fascination for Argentine Tango. The movie, "The Tango Lesson", I know impacted me when it came out in the '90's.

No one was teaching or dancing it here - I wondered if it would ever come, or just remain a tantalizing mystery that just happened somewhere else, where it was 'goin' on'. Passion grew to dance this dance. I felt it deep inside, longed for it. They say you don't dance tango. You feel it. Tango is in the heart & it flows from there. Several things are said of & about Tango. "Tango is Life," they say in Argentina.

Drawn to understand a culture that would think like that, the 3 words themselves speak profound meaning.  It is interesting, as someone who loves to dance, to understand the cultures, origins & beginnings of dance.

Argentine Tango is a language. It speaks of a people who have developed very unique dance culture that  parallels their life. This is indicative of other Afro-Latino cultures as well - Cuba & Brazil among others also have developed dance-significant cultures.

When watching the dance, listening to the music, I feel the language, more than I can explain it. It tells a story of heart, of a people, of life in the streets of Buenos Aires; of the Portenos survival of difficult life experience, preservation & expression of passion in dance. Another thing they say in Buenos Aires is "Dance until Life Goes Away". Doesn't that simple statement just say a bunch? The dance was/is survival, peace of mind. They are known to dance all night!

Amazing, I hear tango speak in the 'spaces'. You have to find that yourself.

I operated a shop where I supplied dance shoes to dancers in Kelowna & BC. Sometimes customers who danced Tango would tell me of their passion for the dance. (usually because I wouldn't let them go til they did!) One gentleman demonstrated with his partner, then danced me around the floor. I love the way it looks. I loved the way it felt. I longed for it even more as time went on!

Argentine Tango started in Kelowna 2002. Initially I was not able to participate for various reasons.

Sharon Sebo, a local dance instructor with her dance partner, started learning from a dvd. They went on to expand their professional expertise & Sharon has been teaching Tango since.

As I walked across the street to my garden at dusk one evening, I noticed the familiar form of Sharon Sebo unpacking some things from her car.  I also became aware of the strains of the tango bandoneon music doing that ... thing ~~~ that it ~ does ~~, through the still evening air. In astonishment, I asked unbelieving, pointing to the church. "Are you teaching here?" Well...

Argentine Tango has come right to my front door!!

Sharon Sebo is dedicated to dance. She is a talented, patient  and skilled teacher. For dance information and schedules contact www.tangokelowna.com

Ah, Deborah... You picked such a romantic dance!  Every November there is this couple from Argentina that invites their students (and whoever else wants to go) to Argentina on a tango tour.  You have lessons with the 'masters' there.  You dance in the streets and in the small cafes in Argentina.  This is a two week tour and it is heavenly.  You travel with some teachers as well.  What a wonderful way to experience the country and its culture!!!

I could not get my you tube to post the actual video.  Here is my treat for you !

Marie!!! You made my morning! What a delight; I smiled with joy. The trip to Argentina sounds lovely. It is one of my dreams to go & spend at least a month, renting an apartment in Buenos Aires.

You're a great blogger with all that You-tube stuff. I'm a beginner, learning & not really up to all the creativity yet.

Have a terrific day & thanks again!

You're welcome!  It's good to get a smile with joy in the morning.  Wouldn't it be nice to get a group of AR tango lovers to go with us to Argentina?

Deborah, You explained that very well!! I definitely can feel your passion about the dance! There is something about dancing and (in my opinion) singing, that has a primal connection! It came to your front door for a reason.

Absolutely! Thanks so much Karen! We were short a fella (lead), so I tried stepping up to that last lesson - I did okay! I've always had an appreciation for the man's lead & have even nore now!

Do you dance, sing? Have a terrific day!

Yes Marie, that would be fabulous! But first we'd have to stir those AR dancers out from wherever they are! They must be around here somewhere....... I can't make any plans in the near future but it's definitely on my dream list - and you see what happens when you dream - tango came to my front door?!

Cheers & thanks again - you're a doll!

My dad, who used to be around 6'5 before he got older, used to be the absolute best dancer I have ever known, to this day. Because I am also tall, it was always hard to find a dancer that I "fit" with, who also liked to dance:(    I only really got to dance with him at weddings though, but what a lead! He has parkinsons now and can barely walk, but my mom tells me ~ every once in awhile, he hobbles out of his chair and does a little two step:)    Yes I dance and sing, however, as I am getting older myself, it happens less and less, although I still love it. Never did any tangos though:)

Ah,Karen,

Tall men talk about how they have a hard time finding partners who are the right height for them! Nowadays that is proving to be so untrue.  There is this professional salsa dancer Joel Hernandez who is less than 5 feet tall, but he is absolutely amazing.  You will see him dancing in a salsa club with four ladies (all at the same time) with a line of ladies waiting to dance with him on the other side of the wall.  He leads them all - tall women, short women, all shapes and sizes.  If the man leads and we as women follow, it does not matter if they are taller or shorter, we all "fit" and can make beautiful dancing together.  I've seen it happen many times.

Wow, and you can sing tooo.  You should come with us to Argentina... And,Deborah, we can also go on an AR Dance Cruise!

What a lovely legacy Karen! I find it so warming to hear about a girl & her dad dancing & someone who loves to dance so much!

Cheers & happy memories!

Marie, Sounds wonderful, but my dancing and singing days are at a minimum. Can't hit those chords as well. I agree about the fit, but a tall women like myself is always looking for a taller lead. Although, I will take a great dancer over a tall lead anyday!  If you do start up a cruise, I will expect photos, with music:)

Deborah, memories are life:)

Deborah, what a beautiful way to tell the story of the dance.  I have always wanted to learn all types of Ballroom dancing, not one in particular because I am drawn to them all....and haven't done it....YET.  So if you start that cruise, I'm there!  And I too have seen the shortest men lead all kinds of women around the floor and they make the women stand out....even though they're the better dancers!

Tango is life! Thanks Carole.

Marie - You are a hoot!

You are right - when a guy knows how to dance he can lead anyone. I'm single & would like such a partner - send some energy my way!

Cheers - thanks for your support & love of dance.

I'm IN!  I'm IN!  Pick me!  pick me!  I've always wanted to visit Argentina, ever since I saw Robert Duval in "Assasination Tango"...oh...my...god--if you haven't seen it, DO!  He actually lives there part time, apparently, and did the dancing in the film.  Let's go!

Loretta - I certainly have seen "Assination Tango" - crappy movie - FABULOUS DANCING!!! Yes I understand Robert Duval also met his lover on the streets of Buenos Aires, a tango instructor and they've been 2 to tango since! ...well since last time I checked anyway!

Your enthusiasm is positively infectious!! Thanks for checking in!

I am interested in taking tango lessons, but live in Vernon. Do you know of anyone teaching tango here? or do I have to travel to Kelowna for Tango lessons?
Posted by Anonymous over 4 years ago

I am unaware pf anyone teaching this fabulous dance in Vernon. It is fairly new to Kelowna, and taught as mentioned in this post by Sharon Sebo. The schedule remains the same. The website www.tangokelowna.com can be accessed for more information.

Thanks for checking in!
